If you call yourself a "singer" and haven' done this training, you really should. I'm a 50 year old rock/funk singer. Used to blow out my voice sometimes after the first set. No more! No more hoarse voice after a gig either. And yes... I"m singing Journey and Stevie Wonder tunes without straining and pushing... WORTH EVERY PENNY!!! Thanks Mr. Riggs!!!!
I trained and apprenticed with Seth Riggs for two years. Therefore I can speak authoritatively about the accuracy and efficacy of the material in this book/CD set. Seth Riggs is, in my opinion, the greatest voice teacher alive. The list of his successful students is a veritable Who's Who of Grammy winners and musical greats...spanning the entire spectrum of the musical field.The only concern I have is that 'self-teaching' is extremely difficult for most people to do...even with an outstanding resource such as this. IMHO, voice training is one of those areas that demand the services and assistance of an effective teacher. Singing for the Stars can be big help all by itself but coupled with regular voice lessons it would be so much more.
This is a very good book to be used by voice teachers and people who really understand about voice technique. It is explained in simple words but to be able to totally understand it you need to know the basics of breathing, support, vocal placement etc. In the right hands it can be very useful for personal development or as a complement to help your voice students. I use it with my students and it has given me great results.If you are new to voice technique or if you are trying to learn to sing by your self this book is not the best choice for you. Now, if you have a voice teacher who knows this technique you can, UNDER SUPERVISION use this book to compliment your vocal training. The vocalizations are excellent!
I've been singing with Rock and Roll bands for over 20 years. I've taken lessons from many excellent vocal teachers and spent a lot of money learning how they wanted me to sing. This approach was the first that took most of what I thought was the "correct" way to sing and corrected the mistakes I'd been making for years!!! Over the past several months, working on my own and "putting" the time in to rehearse each day for a minimum of a half an hour, I find my range has increased, I have better control of my voice and the original "breathing" techniques I was taught almost got in the way. This is an excellent investment and works!!! You can also find teachers in your area who teach Seth Riggs style so you can improve beyond this. As it states this is a complete program. Follow it and you will become a better singer!!
The principles behind this book use exercises which educate you to sing without the larynx rising up which actually interferes with good singing, and to sing with a connected voice from chest voice into head voice, without breaking into falsetto.The content is good, though too much space is given to testimonials, and more space should be given to explanation and theory.The CD's are very well laid out with instructions from the author, a singer demonstrating the exercises which are on different tracks, which makes it easy to skip to the essential bits. You can practice while driving for example.As I have been getting speech singing vocal training for over a year, I can testify to the value of the method.Unless you are already a well trained singer with good technique, you really should not use this type of course without also getting lessons. A vocal trainer can identify how to improve tone, breathing etc and point out technique errors such as overblow or too much air pressure, which you might never identify by yourself. It is so easy to damage your voice by using incorrect technique or overdoing the exercises.After using this for a few days and then applying the technique to sing along to a recording, I was able to do so without straining and hitting higher notes than usual with much less effort, which was amazing. I am now on my way to a voice that I did not dare to dream was possible.The second CD is more about applying the exercises and producing the speech level singing tone, and runs through song examples using those passage areas with very useful tips to avoid splattering your sound.For less than the cost of a voice lesson this is a great investment, which I highly recommend. You can imagine how helpful this is. The more you use this method, the more you will improve to the point where you will have the voice you have always dreamed of having. I wonder if you found this helpful.Since writing this review originally, I met a woman, a singer songwriter from Australia, who sung the wrong way. As a result she damaged her voice. She was told by doctors that she would never be able to sing again. Her only hope would be if she stopped speaking for a year. She did this communicating by notepad. She lost some of her social skills. She did get her voice back, and then learned the speech singing method being taught personally by Seth Riggs, and became a speech level singing instructor.The American idol people put out a product using this method American Idol Singer's Advantage - Male Version (DVD Entertainment Size Package), and among Riggs clients was Michael Jackson, and you can hear some of this on youtube.
Book was mailed in good condition. I was told that this is a good book for those trying to rebuild their voices.
This is a very useful book for singers of all genres. Mr. Riggs seems to understand concepts that many voice teachers do not. His approach is useful and admirable.As a professional singer, I am in a position to know whether or not this can be helpful to singers who do not understand the concepts that create healthy singing,and I do advocate it.
